Nature vs. Nurture; Man vs. Angel

In this race, it seems that Americans are so disillusioned with our current reality, (a reality that Thomas Jefferson most accurately described when saying, "men are no angels") that we have to removed the "humanness" from our candidates, making them superhuman, as is the case with Obama or in the case of Hillary subhuman, that is morally defiant, bereft of sympathy and empathy; a so called manish brute who is incapable of translating the "human" experience. In contrast, Obama assumes the role of the Angel. He embodies all that is divine. He is the one capable of transcending this earthly life- what I would call reality. Being human, one must recall the reality of war( but its all going to be okay b/c he didn’t vote for it), the selfish and maximizing behavior that is the underpinning and logical consequence of the free market orthodoxy( now, now, homeless americans who by theway everyday call me up facing home foreclosures, Barack will be able to compromise so maybe you can get half your house back; now,now silly tree-huggers let’s compromise on global warming because I am quite sure that the chief industrialists will give up most of their profit and luxury lifestyle so as to reduce carbon emissions.) But Barack need not strain his vocals with extraneous detail. In between his arias of ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, Hillary carries all the DO and RE. That is what she wants to DO, her solutions, seem too REal to grasp.
But Obama has called me, even led me, to look on the bright side! We have at least fifty whole years left to live on earth. Of course he will be 95 then and anyway once in heaven he will finally fulfill his coronation into sainthood. But hey he gave some GREAT speeches right? What did anyone else ever do? or shall I say when has anyone else evered "do'ed". UMMMMMM.. Remember Hillary? Oh yea. She do'ed through all her time during wellsley and Yale. Now it is time to RE but because of the "shrillness" of her voice, she her pitch is not perfect. So the tone-deaf democrats ignore the crucial piece in the traditional melodical scale (one that most definitely or should i say DEFIANTLY has worked since the birth of music) in order to sing ME ME ME ME ME! Which is by the way to every individual's own ear PITCH PERFECT.
Are we so against an actual woman being president that the media must make her masculine- bedaubing her with "status-quo,"hard-lined characterizations. Paradoxically, the male candidate can have it all. He is soft but tought; caring but stern, and most of all comforting. He seems so down to earth that he has skipped the level of mortal existence altogether- somehow escaping the "stain" of being human- namely the mortal foibles of selfishness and being motive driven.

What I am ultimately suggesting is that it only seems that we want our candidates to be like us. Why else would we mold their identity into "others". Is this a reflection of our own identity crises; for me perhaps it reflects the ultimate quest for perfection. Perfection being defined as escaping one’s own humanity in order to escape the reality of our lives. The generational boom triggered by Obama’s eloquence is not the natural result of inspiration. It is but a mere symptom of unacknowledged political pathology. This pathology is the innate desire to transcend the dark side of human nature. Its expression is seen in the efforts to morph the candidates into mythical creatures and/or saviors. I am certainly not immune. I have bouts of feverish idealism but they are mediated by the understanding that in order to sculpt any ideal you need to get down and dirty with detail. The finessing of language only goes so far. Furthermore, idealism and change are not and should not be mutually exclusive to experience. After all, in order to change doesn’t one need a solid command of detail? Inspiration should be the mere "provacateur", the motivator to be able express humanity’s full human potential. Stripping the future leaders of our country of all "humanness"so that they rise above or below individual expectations/ideals is not the way to effect change. The musical scale can be studied but in the end it is the sound and stong performance of the strong that counts.
